I have always marveled at how changes in language can alter our perceptions about things. As an example, here in the US when we come down with something, we often say that we have "caught a cold". Since it is such a normal part of our everyday speech, it is easy to take for granted what this really means.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), when someone comes down with a "cold", it is said, instead, that they have caught "wind". They even further differentiate between catching "wind-cold" or "wind-heat".
I recently heard a fellow acupuncturist say that she loved TCM because of the ways that it fills in the gaps of western medicine, and I think this subject is a nice example. Modern medicine helps us to understand that it is not cold or wind that makes us sick, but rather that we have been exposed to a virus or bacteria that our immune system is unable to fend off. That said, even though it may be an external pathogen that actually makes us sick, it can be wind or cold that weakens our body's defenses in the first place, making us unable to fight it off.
So what can you do to fend off this season's wind-cold or wind-heat?
